Katrina Story #2

The man in this photo had endured thirteen abdominal surgeries. Before the storm, he had become complacent and even depressed. He sat around the house all day and did nothing. He withdrew from family life and all activity. And when the storm came, he sent them to higher ground, while he stayed behind to ride out the storm at home.

Katrina Story #1

This man told me the story of how he and his brother, who is wheelchair-bound, rode out the storm at home. The first part of the storm passed, and his brother rolled outside, thinking it was over. But it was just the eye. With the second half of the storm came the water. Eighteen feet, to be exact.

The Power of Storytelling

Storytelling is quickly becoming a major part of what Leah and I offer our clients. We’ve always provided captions to go along with the photos we take for organizations, but lately we’ve been asked to go further and develop stories and photo essays that our clients can use on their websites, magazines and other publications. Stories enrich the meaning and significance of the photos we take by connecting them to a specific human experience that people can relate and respond to.

São Paulo

São Paulo is an amazing, sprawling, bustling, alive city and it was a great beginning to our adventure in Brazil. We were inspired by the work of organizations like Novo Amanhecer and CENA who are working to heal individual lives and transform neighborhoods. Stay tuned for entries about our adventures in Belém, a northern river city in the Amazon basin; and Rio De Janeiro, the sensual city of contrasts.

Leaving Brazil

By the time we get home tomorrow, we will have traveled about 13,000 miles in eight days. While in Brazil, we traveled over three thousand miles to three different cities — each with its own unique culture and climate.
This evening, we will begin the final five thousand-mile leg of our trip back to Philly. It […]

From Rio de Janeiro

I would be able to hear the ocean from where I’m sitting if it weren’t for the twelve lanes of traffic between our hotel and the beach. And that sums up our experience in Rio so far: natural beauty teeming with millions of people.
This is the third city we’ve visited so far (after Sao Paulo […]

To Brazil!

Today, Leah and I are off to Brazil on a photo assignment!
The American Bible Society is sending us to photograph the work that they’re doing in several regions of Brazil. We will also be writing at least three short profiles for them that they will incorporate into their website, brochures, and other printed materials.
ABS has […]

Photo Spotlight

I am often asked for the story behind a particular photo that captures someone’s imagination. So every once in a while, I’ll post one of those photos on the blog and give some brief background info.

This photo was taken at a state park in Denver, Colorado. Some friends of mine were going cliff-jumping (that’s where you jump off a cliff…usually into water).
