They say a picture is worth a thousand words…

Everyone can agree that great photos are nice to have around - to hang on the wall, to display proudly on the desk, or to send out in the annual holiday letter. But aside from the artistic value of a well-composed shot, is there additional value in using dynamic photography? Yes! Photography is a powerful medium and can communicate a message and move people to action.

Leah in South Africa with local Chief’s wifeThink about your favorite snapshot. What makes it your favorite? How does it make you feel? For me, I think about the photograph of the 4-year-old version of myself learning to brush her teeth, or the sunset shot my husband took minutes before he proposed to me! Another favorite is the photo of me standing with a South African village chief’s wife as she gave me a hand-woven basket.

The point is that a photo is more than just a photo…it represents a story.

This is especially important for organizations that are in the business of helping people. Your challenge is to communicate the stories you see everyday in a way that motivates others to join you. This is where really good photos can make or break your message. Photos can bridge cross-cultural divides, create a sense of intimacy, and ultimately make your organization stand out in a sea of stories. We believe that good photography tells a story. And we believe that stories move people to action. Whether these stories are hopeful, tragic, joy-filled, or moving, our job is to tell them.

I think my favorite photo is a recent one. I have a picture with my mom after I walked down the aisle in graduation. The story is me being the 1st person in my family to graduate college. But it goes deeper. Just being an individual in today’s society is a feat all in itself. After reading this, I realize I have a story to tell.
