A good, long trip

In case you were wondering how long it takes to drive from Philadelphia, PA to Pearlington, MS, it’s about twenty-one hours. Last Friday, a group from our church made the trip down there. And yesterday, after a week of good hard work, we made the long drive back.

Reverend RawlsPearlington is a small town on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi that was at once wiped off the map and put back on the map when the eye of Hurricane Katrina made landfall there. This unincorporated town of about 1,200 people wasn’t even on FEMA’s radar. So help was a long time coming for them. But once people began to hear about the plight of Pearlington, the volunteers came in waves.

A volunteer working in Pearlington, MSNow, there is a regular presence of between 150 and 300 volunteers in Pearlington on any given week. Many of whom return once or twice a year to build homes and deepen relationships. Our church has made the trip four times since the hurricane.

The most incredible part of the trip was listening to all the stories of the survivors. I will post one later this week. It’s an unbelievable story of survival, loss and hope. I’m still settling in at this point, and taking Easter Sunday off, so the photos will be posted tomorrow.

    Hi Drew,

Great to see these pictures - it’s so easy to forget the reality of Katrina, as it’s not in the news everyday. Your pictures were very touching.

    Keep up the great work!
