Storytelling is quickly becoming a major part of what Leah and I offer to our clients. We’ve always provided captions to go along with the photos we take for organizations, but lately we’ve been asked to go further and develop stories and photo essays that our clients can use on their websites, magazines and other publications. Stories enrich the meaning and significance of the photos we take by connecting them to a specific human experience that people can relate and respond to.
So while I’m busy taking photos, Leah is doing what she does best: connecting with people. She has always been genuinely interested in the lives of others, and her natural ability to draw fascinating stories from people is uncanny. As is her ability to communicate those stories through great writing.
We believe that great photographs are essential for communicating the mission and message of nonprofits. But photographs are most effective when they are woven into a story that connects them with the feelings and emotions of others. When great stories are combined with great photography, the impact is exponentially more powerful.
One resource that we turn to often - and recommend to our clients - is the Nonprofit Communications blog maintained by Kivi Leroux Miller. Although she rarely writes about the power of photography to communicate (that’s where we come in), she freely offers topnotch advice on a wide range of issues (including storytelling) that affect nonprofit organizations. We even attended one of her webinars, and were really impressed with the amount and quality of information.
Whether you are a client of ours, or a friend, or family, we encourage you to think about your story, and seek out the stories of others. Storytelling is one of the most ancient forms of human relation, connection, and interaction. And we have the great pleasure of making a living by immersing ourselves in the stories of others, and communicating those stories as best we can.
