One of the consequences of extreme poverty that people don’t often talk about is the affect on the environment. As people in Haiti have scoured the land for resources, deforestation has become a problem. In the 1920’s, over 60% of Haiti was forested; by 2006, less than 2% was.
One result of deforestation is increased soil erosion, which is having an affect on farm production, which in turn exacerbates the overall problem.
Geneva Global is a philanthropic organization that funds sustainable farming initiatives. These initiatives are led by Haitian experts who show farmers how to use terraced landscaping and other techniques to decrease erosion and increase production.
